Dumas Library Re-Launches 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program

Did you know that you easily can read 1,000 books to your child before they begin kindergarten? The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is an exciting, fun, and free way to begin building the foundation of your child’s path to success in school and in life. Your child’s brain rapidly develops within the first few years of life, being 85% of its adult size by the time they begin kindergarten. The easy and fun act of sharing and reading books to your child helps them learn essential skills needed for school success such as understanding letter/sound awareness, increasing their vocabulary, and building narrative skills.

Sign-up and participation is super simple!

  1. Register for the program by visiting the library. Each child will need a library card; the parent fills out the registration form.
*Parents/guardians must have an active and in-good-standing library card.
  2. Read and log books in your child’s reading log. Just color in a circle for every time you read a book together.
  3. Report back to the library with your reading log every time you complete 100 books to receive a small prize and new reading log.
  4. Repeat until you and your child have finished 1,000 books. Upon completion of 1,000 books, your child will receive a grand prize and their picture posted on the library’s social media (with parent’s permission).

Can my child and I really read 1,000 books before they begin kindergarten? YES! If you read just 1 book a night, every night, for 3 years, you and your child will have read 1,095 books. It’s that easy!
